What You Should Look For in a Professional Roofing Contractor

Whether they operate large or small businesses, professional roofing contractors all have the following traits in common: they are well-established, with a permanent place of business, a telephone number, a tax identification number and a business license; they are experienced and knowledgeable; they carry both workers’ compensation and liability insurance; and they are committed to worker education and safety.

Find out as much as you can about the contractors you are considering.  Once you’ve contacted these contractors, ask those who bid on your job for the following:

  • A written proposal that outlines what work is to be done, the amount that is to be charged, and the terms of any warranty or warranties to be given;

  • Proof of liability insurance, which protects you against personal injury to you or others and against damage to your property or the property of others while the contractor is performing work on your home or building;

  • Proof of workers’ compensation insurance, which protects the contractor’s employees while working on your job; and

  • A list of customer references, which you should check to be sure that the contractor has performed as promised.

If you still have doubts, contact your local Better Business Bureau for further information.

Currently, the state of Georgia does NOT require a roofing license.  AS a result, GARCA has put together a voluntary licensing program whereby we require proof of business registration, insurance coverage in addition to having contractors pass a roofing test.
